GIVING POULTS A GOOD
START
(Care of baby turkeys)
To properly care for baby turkeys also known as poults, it is essential to provide them with a warm, clean, and safe environment (brooder) with a heat source, fresh water, and high-protein starter feed (about 28% concentration) and include grit to aid digestion.
Ensure the brooder is well-ventilated but draft-free, and gradually reduce the temperature as they grow.
Keep the area clean, offer enough space to move, and monitor their behavior for any signs of illness. Baby turkeys should be vaccinated against prevailing diseases specific to your locality. This should be done in collaboration with a veterinary professional.
The brooding stage of turkeys is the most critical time in a turkey’s life. A mastery of this stage is essential in the overall success in the management of the turkey bird.
